OH WONDER: THE RAIN
My first brush with Oh Wonder came in the form of their second single “Shark”, revealing the fin of some slow-groovin’ soul wizards just beneath the surface. The only bits of information on the perfectly paired voices of a man and woman, currently anonymous, is the fact they are from London, they plan to release one song a month, and they are good at what they do. The episodic releases which have given new reason to look forward to the first of each month will reach their climax this September with a debut album whose title is unknown as of yet -- how fitting. “The Rain” serves as January’s installment of the series and it provides a lovely segue into 2015.
In our intro the duo yields a wholesome harmony admitting that, “Ever since the rain I’ve been waking on my own...” A broken drum beat carries the modern R&B vibe while delicate keys lament over the bummed-out chapters of a one-sided relationship. As clouds begin to form, the track picks up on cymbals and a beefy low-end before the grey skies meet their match with a burst of bright horns and synths to match. It’s a treat of a tune that will do more than hold us over until next month’s release.
All five releases can be streamed on their Soundcloud to feed our needs until the album sees it’s release later this year.
