The Tambo Rays
It seems the California sunshine has managed to seep its way in to my skin this summer, worked it's way in to my blood stream, and completely saturated my insides with a love for all things jangly, psychedelic rock and surf pop.
During my long-standing reign as Queen of list-making I have, of course, made a long list of San Francisco-based bands that I consider my duty to uncover. One of these bands was The Tambo Rays, who I saw play at The Elbo Room alongside another of the bands on my list The Fresh and Onlys and another completely new to me - Hot Flash Heat Wave. This evening was curated by Commune (a local anti-tobacco movement of artists & musicians) and as each band came on I couldn't help proclaim aloud that they were all so... Californian. While my new friend from Sofar Sounds tried to convince me otherwise, it was too late, my original stereotype of California 'beach music' had been confirmed (not that it's a bad thing).
The Tambo Rays, who started out as a brother sister duo and are now a 4-piece, were the stand-out of the evening for me. Their comfortable, carefree stage presence and upbeat summery music had me instantly dancing around making a fool out of myself, and I certainly wasn't the only one in the crowd to be doing so.
