[ALBUM REVIEW] Glass Animals: ZABA
"Sit back, relax, and let the cosmic sound vibrations of ZABA sporadically, but ever-so euphorically flutter like butterflies throughout your body, soul and mind..."
That sounded like a hallucinogenic-induced mantra I heard from the divine, but if you were to ask me to describe what Glass Animals debut sounded like, I'd be proud and content with what I said. And I swear I did not roll up a CD copy of the album and smoke it, thinking it would get me high. You won’t need even the smallest hint of a psychedelic drug boost, because once the first track "Flip" hits your ears, you are hooked with no turning back. I'd liken it to the feeling of opening up your eyes, to suddenly discover you are drifting in outer space.
I think you get the gist - that ZABA is diverse, trippy and eclectic. If what I've described to you was enticing and you want to be part of the trip, it's about time you let these sonic waves enter your being (or ears).
With this debut album being as good as it was, it's safe to say Glass Animals are a band that has their own unique sound. It is at once balanced, eccentric, simple and linear. The heavy emphasis of ambiance and dissonant sounds in the background of each song helps compliment the atmosphere, style and tone, while not sounding overdone, cliché or cheesy. There is solid musicianship amongst all band members with a culmination of dub, ethic, psychedelic and soul. While this helps build the foundation of their sound, each song invokes different moods and feelings. The structure of the album as well felt like each individual track was a different chapter in a really awesome Sci-Fi novel. Once you get to the last planet "JDNT", you will return to Earth, with the residual affects of the album leaving you feeling cathartically cleansed.
If all this sounds absolutely amazing to you, don't think twice about getting yourself a little dose of ZABA. This is an absolutely solid first effort, and it's enough to convince us that these guys are not going anywhere. So just sit back, relax, put your headphones on and enjoy the ride....
