Jessie Ware: Tough Love
If you’re anything like me, then you’ve been spending much of the past year eagerly awaiting a new tidbit from Jessie Ware. You were thrilled when Orange Is the New Black’s second season saw the placement of her “Valentine” song with Sampha. Blessed be the Netflix gods for reminding us of Jessie's soft crooning voice and taste for pop-friendly, hip hop tinged songs.
Her debut album, Devotion, made quite a splash. It delivered softly sung hit after hit, and winning over masses with the charms of songs like “Sweet Talk” and “Wildest Moments”. What the first album did so well, the first single of the second album delivers again.
“Tough Love” is not so much a song of heartbreak, but is rather a song about the struggle to get over someone. Jessie’s voice delivers another stellar performance while continuing to effortlessly blend that Sade/Aaliyah beauty. Given her myriad of influences, it’s hard to pin her down to a genre. She at once fuses pop, retro music and hip hop flawlessly, and that’s why we love her. If her upcoming album is anything as good as this single, I think we’re in for a real swoony treat. Also, let us not forget that she’s rumored to be working with Miguel and Ed Sheeran.
Whatever love I feel for Jessie Ware, certainly isn’t “Tough Love”, but is in fact, the easiest, sweetest emotion I’ve ever felt.
