Nick Hakim's steamy vocals stopped me in my tracks while pursuing Soundcloud last week. The following day I was reminded of his talents when Yours Truly posted a video of a recent session they conducted with the NY soul singer. Plus, the talented D.C. native currently resides in Bed-Stuy, where we happen to be staying for the time being. Whatever the reason, something (Fate? The Universe?) is telling me to listen closely to Hakim.
On the track "Cold", Nick comes in heavy with his deep and brooding vocals atop a weighty and soulful beat. He has the finesse of John Legend, but with a more unique and underground touch. His vocals have the innate ability to carry you away, accentuated by his looping and layering techniques. His vocals are thick in texture, yet spacious and delicate in execution; creamy dreamy is an understatement.
Mirroring his music, Hakim remains mysterious and ambiguous. As with anything, the more difficult it is to obtain, the more lustful we are for it, so you can understand how we feel about receiving more material from, and clues about, the artist known as Nick Hakim.
While we wait for his debut EP to drop on July 14th, pour yourself a tall glass of red and melt away into the emotional sounds created by this NY-based soul-magician.
