[EVENT & PLAYLIST] Sasquatch! Festival
A music festival named after a giant furry mythical creature that inhabits mountainous areas and strikes fear into the hearts of lumberjacks?! What better location than an outdoor amphitheater in a huge gorge in Washington to hold such a colossal-sounding event?
The fact Sasquatch! Festival has named one of their stages the 'Narwhal' stage (my all-time favourite mythical creature, with the 'Liger' coming in as a close second), means they are clearly on to something. I suppose the lineup isn't half bad either.
This year, the festival hosts an impressive selection of big names, most of whom are gracing the US summer festival circuit. Acts like Outkast, QOTSA, M.I.A., Foals, Cold War Kids, Cut Copy, Portugal. The Man, City & Colour, First Aid Kit, Hozier, Phantogram, and De La Soul you'd be remiss not to see. Die Antwoord and Big Freedia you'll have to take with a pinch of salt.
Aside from these, we have a few must-see acts we personally recommend you check out over the weekend... Chet Faker, Banks, Panda Bear, Phospherescent, Washed Out, Band Of Skulls, Damien Jurado, Liars, Lucius, Papa, Night Beats, Cloud Control, Parquet Courts, Radiation City. With a special mention to the following:
We have been singing Merrill Garbus's praises since the equally talented looping king, Moses Sumney, first introduced us to her music. Seeing her create a wall of sound using percussion, ukelele and her vocals played in layers through a looping station, is a unique live act that you'd be well... kind of an idiot to miss.
THE GRIZZLED MIGHTY
Excuse our language, but the Grizzled Mighty can f*cking PLAY. We were lucky enough to see these two play live this year at SXSW, and let me tell you, you will be shocked indeed that such a huge sound could come from just two people. Ryan and Whitney are a force to be reckoned with and, to be honest, probably would be a pretty good match for the Sasquatch himself if he ever made an appearance.
These San Francisco boys have long graced our iTunes, and our hearts, and not just because we once met them in a gas station in France playing hacky sack. Another duo with a larger-than-life sound, Meric Long and Logan Kroeber know how to take a set from subdued to energetic in a manner of seconds.
We have been missing France lately, so this one is a purely self-indulgent addition. But really, who wouldn't want to be wooed by a cute French woman and her band, with their sweet dance-pop tunes on a Friday night in a beautiful gorge? No-one, that's who.
After catching these boys supporting White Denim back in London, we have been following this band's musical ventures all the way over to the California desert. Their blend of psychedelic folk-rock we can tell you from first-hand experience are the perfect soundtrack to a stunning backdrop.
If you're heading to the festival this weekend, here is a playlist to get you in the mood as you road-trip your way in to the magnificent gorge. If you are choosing to spend your Memorial Day Weekend in another way, maybe this will make you feel like you aren't missing out quite so much.
