New York based band, Stargazy have paid their dues as a hustling band and are finally receiving the much-deserved attention from publications and fans alike. Thankfully, by-way of the blogosphere network, we were introduced to their music. They were nice enough to answer some of our questions, and even let us preview two of their tracks "Golden Hour" and "Years" off of their forthcoming second EP, The Fashion.
How did Long Island and Pierre conjoin to make Stargazy?
We believe LI and Pierre were meant to be together, although many people from both places might disagree. It's almost like they are lacking what the other can provide. South Dakota is full of mysticism, purity, sweet people and vast sparseness while Long Island is a never-ending suburb, rich in good food and harsh languaged loud mouths. Our synthist, Jared, is the Pierre connection. And us Long Islanders love him dearly.
What are some of your favorite things about living in the concrete jungle?
Growing up, our parents told us in a very serious manner to mind our p's and q's when going to the city. We had to watch out for pick pockets and "don't stare too long at the drag queens" because they might turn us to their side or whatever. That's only fear. And I think that's why a lot of people enjoy New York. Not because it's dangerous, not even close, not anymore. But because the city represents something sublimely powerful. We are drawn to the sheer energy of it and the caliber of people it produces. Also, there's lot of good coffee shops.
Have there been any places in particular that have inspired your music?
Our music isn't as "place" inspired as it is "time" inspired. At least right now. The content of our music lately has really reflected where we fit in this world as well as where we personally fit in our own little worlds in this particular place in time.
What bands have been on constant rotation, or simply worthy of our attention?
Snowmine, Temples, Depreciation Guild & Bruce Springsteen.
You mentioned in a previous interview that you felt ‘naked’ about releasing your EP. We would love for you to elaborate on that.
We said that, huh? In that case, I'm not too sure being naked is all that bad. In fact it's pretty good. I guess it really depends on who's in front of you. To liken releasing new music to being naked is accurate, but in this case we are actually very proud of our current state of nude.
We really like your new track, “Golden Hour”, could you tell us a bit about the track and how it came about?
Golden Hour is our rejection of the verse-chorus-verse model. It's totally linear. Sonically GH came from a place of exploration. Mostly everything until this song was identifiably the same tempo, feeling, and song writing attack. Hands down our favorite performance song.
Congratulations on the upcoming release of your second EP, 'The Fashion'. Compared to your debut EP, what was different this time around during the recording process?
Thank you! We shall say the second EP happened upon a stream of consciousness. Ideas spilled from our amalgamated brains to tape much faster and a feeling of musical enlightenment occurred in our own little age of renaissance. We usually take our time to produce & mix our music and tend to experience many thrills & spills along the way. So nailing this EP within 4 months was really refreshing. Maybe this time the Golden skies opened wide. Maybe the whispering voices you may or may not hear guided us along the way. Who knows.
Do you have any advice for bands who are just starting out, and trying to make it in a big city such as NY?
Play the right shows. Watch out for venues who put you on bills with MacBook solo acts. Record & produce your own music. Look for a really awesome rehearsal space and share it with an amazing partner band (Folding Legs!)
Your music has been described as "anthemic pop" and "80's era romanticism" by music publications, if you were to describe your sound, what words would you choose?
"Arena mainstream" or "Neon Phase Expressionism"
What do you have planned for the summer?
Some weddings, a lot of sun block, and perhaps a well-behaved BBQ or two.
Thanks to Michael, Jared, Michael, Alex, Brian and Rocco of Stargazy for taking the time to chat to us. Their second EP The Fashion will be released on May 27. Listen below to two of the tracks off of the upcoming album: "Golden Hour" & "Years".
