A super-group of members from My Morning Jacket, City and Colour, Hacienda and Grupo Fantasma. How have I only just caught wind of Spanish Gold? A new collaborative project of bands which are all quite 'super' and 'gold' in their own right.
Any group containing an extension of My Morning Jacket is ok in my book, stir in incredibly talented members from other musical walks of life... and you have one hell of a good thing.
2012 saw the inception of this fantastical, psych-folk-rock band. Dante Schwebel (Hacienda & City and Colour) and Adrian Quesada (Grupo Fantasma) turned their longtime friendship into a musical endeavor. Naturally, Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket) was added to the mix, and viola... the gates of Heaven rejoiced and a band was birthed. Because let's be honest, what group would be complete without a little bit of MMJ?
With little material released, it is already evident that this super-group is bound for greatness. Not only are the musicians of the highest caliber, but it was produced at some of the most acclaimed studios in the US. The guys cut the first tracks with the help of Dan Auerbach and his undeniably cool flair at his Nashville studio, Easy Eye. The recording process furthered with studio visits at Jim Eno's Austin studio, Public Hi Fi as well as Lalaland and Big Orange.
Schwebel, Quesada and Hallahan combine elements of 70's folk-rock harmonies and breezy melodies to create that melancholic feeling of an easy summer's day; it's all a bit of alright.
They have released two tracks, one original, "Out On The Street" and one cover, "There Is Something In My Heart": both worth your while. Their debut album 'South of Nowhere' will be released on May 27 via BMG/Del Mar Records.
