Happy Birthday to us!
We're not quite sure what it means to us as a business, the fact that we established ourselves on April Fool's Day, maybe we are just one big joke? Maybe we are fools to have started this journey at all? Or maybe we just don't take ourselves too seriously. Whatever the reason, this is the day we officially began one year ago, and goddamn it we are foolishly proud of it.
A year ago today, we were two girls with a notepad, a camera and, yes this is corny, A DREAM. And if we had told our 'year-ago' selves back then where we would have got to by now, well we probably wouldn't have believed it. A year ago we were a drawing in a book, an idea, a fantasy, a roughly drawn-up business plan.
The other night we were out in Austin and saw some graffiti on the back of a bathroom stall in the girl's bathroom (standard place to draw inspiration from). It said "Hope is for presidents, and dreams are for those who are sleeping". I have since discovered this is from a terribly depressing song by Andrew Jackson Jihad, fun fact. But there was something about this quote that stuck with me. In fact it made me angry. Hope and dreams are great things, I don't care how often people tell me I am crazy or how many people make remarks about this fantasy world we live in, because you know what? We have made this our reality. And I have never been happier, my whole 26 years on this earth.
We recently threw a really successful showcase at SXSW, forged a professional friendship with boutique clothing brand Free People, made some incredible friends along the way and are now on to bigger and better things. Sure some days we get our dads calling us to ask us if we are making money yet, or when we are coming home (sorry Dad). Sure we have those days of doubt or disbelief, but to get even more soppy; we are in this together. And now it's not just the two of us, we have been expanding our team to now include a host of friends and strangers, of varying talents, from across the globe who wanted to join us. Not that we hired, because really we have nothing to give them but gratitude and compliments, but because they, quote - "can't NOT work with ambitious people like (us) two".
Sometimes*, just sometimes, it's ok to use the hashtag #blessed.
*It is not ok to post a picture of your boyfriend doing something really boring on Instagram and use #blessed.
