only girl: MOUNTAIN
We've all been through the punk rock phase, the emo phase, the ratchet phase... but can you go through a falsetto phase? Seriously, send me anything with some sultry soaring high notes and I'm all ears: Shy Girls, Sam Smith, James Vincent McMorrow, Ariana Grande (What? Yeah, I said it.) - you name it.
There's no exception when it comes to Ellen Murphy aka: only girl. She describes herself as a mix of Mariah Carey and the Cocteau Twins and it's exactly that nostalgic melody and simplicity, combined with her fierce leading lady vocals and songwriting, all on top of polished R&B beats that hooks you. "MOUNTAIN" is her first single and it is a perfect love song.
The world doesn't seem to know much about her other than she's a woman, she's British and she's played a few gigs around the UK all of which have been pretty recent despite having been 'only girl' since early 2011. Alas, through some light/extensive stalking of my own, I've also found that she's engaged to a fellow named Jamie.
I'm only including this last creepy bit because she's written on her tumblr, where she posts cute pictures, hot tracks, new lyrics and song inspirations, that she released "MOUNTAIN" on the one year anniversary of her fiancé's release from neuro-rehab after a traumatic brain injury.
And then you realize the whimsical song you've been jamming out to draws from a situation of tremendous gravitas, which compels you to hit replay again and again so you can break down the lyrics and try to empathize. Then you listen to it one more time, admiring how she was able to write and sing about silver linings and triumphs when she could have easily spewed out verses contrastingly heart wrenching, caught off guard by the big ol' grin that's snuck onto your face.
You can listen to "MOUNTAIN" and other gems like "BITTERSWEET" and "PERFECT HIGH" on her SoundCloud right now, but be on the lookout for her upcoming full EP release sometime this year because it will be lovely --
