[TRAVEL GUIDE] Johnny Lewis' guide to New York
Today, the annual CMJ Music Marathon kicks off in New York City. There will be an overwhelming amount of talented artists in town this week from all across the world, so we thought it would be a great time to get some of the city's locals to show us around.
We asked New York local Johnny Lewis to pick out his top 5 spots to visit in the city:
The Cloisters - The Met's annex for Medieval Art. In a small castle that was disassembled from France, shipped stone by stone to NYC and rebuilt to resemble it's origins, the museum is a masterpiece. Go see some giant unicorn tapestries from the 15th century, ancient armor and beautiful gardens that will swallow you whole just north of Harlem.
Clockwork Bar - Throwback to 1979. This long standing punk bar on the border of Chinatown embodies the term "fuck it" with their $3 PBR's, pinball and amazing punk music selection. I do love going there, but always feel out of place being a folk artist, and that's how it should be.
Joe's Shanghai - Here's the deal - Soup Dumplings. Soup. Gosh Darn. Dumplings. The authentic. The Original. Please go. As Dr. Steve Brule would say, "For your health."
Rebel Rebel Records - West Village record store packed with practically every new release on vinyl you could possible desire. The aging owners are up to speed on current releases and adore true music lovers. It's small, jammed and frankly one of the best record stores in lower Manhattan.
Mast Books - This East Village bookstore has a truly incredible collection of rare and hard to find editions. The owners really know what they are selling and will charge you for it. But if you've been digging for a 1940's edition of Arthur Rimbaud's "Illuminations" - look no further.
You can catch Johnny and his band playing this week at the following CMJ shows (including ours!):
