[LIVE REVIEW] Lord Huron @ SXSW 2013
LORD HURON | MARCH 14, 2013 | MOHAWK | AUSTIN
My only fault about SXSW are its lines. This was one of the obstacles I encountered when trying to see Lord Huron's several showcases; one of which was his first on Rainey Street. Hear Ben Schneider and his band through a barricaded fence, or befriend the security guards [holding guard to the backstage area]. I chose the latter to rectify the solution - as this is my favorite band. Success! I found my way backstage in time to hear [and see] the majority of Huron's set. This short performance would not suffice, so I headed over to Red River to catch their full set at Mohawk. I luckily snagged a perfect spot, caught the last of DIIV - with Ben next to me might I add...They began the set with the cheerful, "The Man Who lives Forever." This set the tone for the energy of the performance, something which immediately engaged the audience. This Austin appearance debuted a new guitarist, new haircuts and a new-polished look all around; as if Los Angeles has refined these Michigan boys.
My highlight had to have been when Schneider pulled out his dangling chimes for the tropical ballad,"We Went Wild." He alternated between two mics (regular and reverb) whilst simultaneously banging large sticks on a stand alone drum and dangling the chimes. Instrumentation like this is the very reason I respect and admire Lord Huron's sound - it combines the influence of spaghetti western, afro-pop and tropicalia. These boys are going to go far and this showcase was a clear reminder of what unique talent the possess. Even Charli XCX was dancing backstage - now, that's breaking boundaries.
