[LIVE REVIEW] Biffy Clyro @ Coachella 2013
BIFFY CLYRO | APRIL 13, 2013 | COACHELLA FESTIVAL | CALIFORNIA
It was the hottest part of the day, in the middle of the Californian desert, probably the last place you'd expect to find three bearded Scottish men. Well, fortunately for the Biffy Clyro boys (but rather unfortunately for me) they have become somewhat less hairy lately, although from our spot on the barrier at main stage we could almost feel their sweet Scottish sweat landing on us. The boys normally play shirtless, tattoos on display, but this was one of those times when we didn't question it at all, in fact we almost wondered why they weren't MORE naked? Wait, is this sounding too much like some sort of terrible fan-romance novel? Who the hell do I think I am, Stephanie Meyer? It seems just thinking of that sweltering heat has made me delusional.
I guess topless men in skinny jeans don't do it for the LA kids these days because the size of the crowd was slightly dismal. I know 2:30 is an early time slot, but you'd think more people would have made the effort to get up, blow dry and straighten their hair, pick out their 'boho' Coachella outfit and get a limo down to the festival in time to actually see some bands play.
I guess it's because they have only just begun to gain momentum in the States, but having seen them over in the UK where they have a huge following, I was perplexed at how easy it was to stroll right up to the barrier.
Despite being accused of 'selling out' recently, these three lads showed the crowd they still knew how to make noise. Frontman Simon Neil managed to serenade the ladies with ballad 'Many of Horror' and scream his way through some of their more ferocious songs, despite being on the verge of Bronchitis (a few days later they were forced to cancel their performance at weekend 2 and the rest of their US tour).
Like several other acts who played weekend 1 of Coachella, their set was tainted by the festival's disorganisation. At least the stage manager had the dignity to walk out and tell Neil (who's reaction was "fucking SHITE") he was out of time, unlike Modest Mouse, who simply had their sound cut off mid-song.
