Maggie Koerner: Neutral Ground
I've been reminiscing about our trip to New Orleans a few months back. It seems like it was an absolute AGE ago that we cruised in to Louisiana late at night, with dark swamplands flanking either side of the interstate.
'Neutral Ground' is a 9-minute epic, the title track off her latest album, and to me captures the very essence of the city of New Orleans (from what I've been lucky enough to see on our short visit). This soulful, swamp rock song shows off Koerner's amazingly versatile vocals; she reaches from the deep, dark and brooding to wails and bellows - powerful sounds you wouldn't expect to hear coming from someone so small and sweet-looking. The video explores the idea of reincarnation; life and death. It was shot deep in the bayou and shows off some of the area's magically spooky scenery - the perfect pairing with Koerner's crooning vocals.
This song & video continue to captivate me, hypnotise me as if I were under some sort of Voodoo spell, so I guess I should post this with one warning: Beware of the Juju.
