Panther and the Zoo: Do Whatever
"Do Whatever" is the second track on Auckland 4 piece Panther and the Zoo's first full-length album More Fun.
The band is named after frontman Graham Panther (probably up there with some of the greatest last names ever) and the 'Zoo' part I am presuming refers to the vast and varied collection of musicians who have performed and recorded with him over the years. Drummer John Parker has described the record as "real pop based stuff with an independent twist", which to be honest isn't entirely descriptive or helpful when trying to conjure up what the music might sound like. Their music is kind of hard to describe, because at first it just sort of sounds like some band you heard once but can't remember the name of or whether you really liked it. The band ambles along behind Panther's glum sounding talk-singing, and it's not until you listen to the songs a few times that you start to pick up on the matter-of-fact dry humour. All in all though, it is definitely an album that grows on you with time.
They've been compared to Weezer and Elvis Costello with a touch of The Strokes, I'm still trying to put my finger on who it is they remind me of so in the mean time go have a listen on Bandcamp here and let me know what you think.
