Liam Finn & BARB
I'm normally a bit skeptical about the success of famous musician's children. It's kind of like having your dad as the coach of your soccer team, he's either going to favour you or punish you rather than treat you the same as everyone else.
None of this poorly described metaphor applies to Liam Finn though. He may be the son of master singer songwriter Neil Finn (Crowded House, Split Enz), but he has proved that he is a talented musician in his own right. His second solo album 'FOMO' (an album title that is fairly off-putting at first) is a sweet collection of pop melodies and thoughtful vocals that you can't help comparing to his Dad's talents.
I have recently discovered Finn's musical expeditions with Connan Hosford (Connan and the Mockasins), James Milne (Lawrence Arabia) and co in a band they started back in 2009/2010 called BARB. Their sound is a genius fusion of psychedelic pop accompanied by some rather strange but mostly playful videos. 'Alcoholic Darling' (above) is an ode to the 90s and our alcoholic generation, while 'Not A Bird' features some brilliantly awkward dance moves, and 'Leo' is a somewhat disturbed tribute to Leonardo DiCaprio written from the perspective of 4 year old named Don.
Finn is in the process of putting out a new album, which from the first taste sounds like it will be more psychedelic and less poppy than his previous work. Head over to his website to have a listen to the demo for 'I' and download it via Bandcamp.
