I've met some pretty wonderful people on my travels, often in the strangest ways. One in particular was when I was desperately trying to make my way from the public transport nightmare that calls itself LA to Joshua Tree National Park to go camping with a friend. I somehow wound up in Hollywood with my giant backpack (plus tent, sleeping bag and god knows what else) meeting a girl I had been speaking to via Craigslist the night before, to then go meet someone else she said could give us a lift. Hey, at least it was girls I was meeting this time, it seemed more promising than my previous Craigslist encounters (another story for another time).
The ride to Palm Springs turned out to be perfect, I had the company of two friendly Canadians and Rachel Fannan, all heading to Coachella festival. Rachel to see her friend's band Dinosaur Jr, and the girls to... well... try to get in without a ticket (they did). I almost wished I was going again the second weekend (see some of our reviews from the first weekend here).
It turns out Rachel was too modest to mention her own musical talents, not only as a solo artist but as a front-woman to numerous bands. Rachel used to live in San Francisco, during that time she was one of the lead vocalists of phsychedelic rock band Sleepy Sun. Since leaving the band in 2010 she has released her own solo album 'Deeper Lurking', had one of her songs feature on a Canon advert (watch here), and now fronts a vintage pop-rock band, called Only You.
I can't emphasis enough how much you should go clicking on all the various links above, to her array of musical creations. She really is a talented musician, with a beautiful and unique voice that has been likened to Björk and Feist among others, although I personally think she has a more old-worldly sound. Keep an eye on this little lady, she's one satin pocket full of talent.
